It’s not a unique story and it’s not earthshaking news. But it’s true and it makes a difference. More people than you’d ever guess entered the natural soap and skincare business – making their own – when they had kids, or when their friends did.
Here’s why. In all kinds of ways – from medical care to nutrition to car-seat and stroller safety – children are regarded and cared for as the most vulnerable among us. Where skincare is concerned, babies are especially vulnerable. As most new parents would agree, what goes on a baby’s precious skin is very important. Commercial soap companies know that parents feel this way so they often make sensitive skin and kid friendly claims.
Not Quite The Best
Babies’ skin is as sensitive as human skin generally gets. It deserves the most skin-compatible soap and skincare we can make. And commercial cleansers can not provide this type of product, whether it’s called sensitive skin or not. Skin detergents – as commercial cleaners basically are – with a slew of ingredients included to offset the skin stripping nature of detergents, are no way to treat a baby’s skin.
Better Products for Everyone
Which brings us back to new parents or friends of new parents going into the soap and skincare business. Commercial manufacturers simply offered no acceptable options. Several of our customers come immediately to mind, and with all of those customers, better products for babies led to better products for adults. Which only makes sense. If babies’ skin is seen as the pristine state of human skin, what’s best for babies’ skin can’t help but be good for toddler, teen, and adult skin. In fact, the older we get, the more synthetic products we’ve used and been exposed to, the more we need products that were actually made to be compatible with our skin. “Natural” is a hard word to trust. There are no standards for skincare products that call themselves natural. Products full of synthetics can call themselves natural. They can place “Now With Olive Oil” in the upper right corner of their label to look like a product they’re not.
The Organic Option
Which is why organic products continue to sell at 10-20% increases per year. Being sure of the ingredients in the natural products we buy means trusting manufacturers to be completely transparent and willing to have an independent third-party verify their claims. Organic certification is the only way to be certain manufacturers are doing as they say.
